How the points system works, and why distance decides it
For entry classes — Nursery, KG and Class 1 — every recognised private unaided school in Delhi must publish its admission criteria and the points attached to each, and the Directorate of Education sets the calendar. The categories schools use are familiar: neighbourhood distance, a sibling already in the school, parent alumni status, staff wards, and a few school-specific ones. What differs is the weight.
These are real published weights, and the spread is the point:
Published admission weights at a sample of Delhi schools (2026-27 entry). Each school sets its own; always read the current sheet.

Two things follow for a buyer. First, a school with a tight radius and a heavy distance weight is effectively a colony-level school: the Defence Colony example rewards 0–3 km with 40 points and drops 10 points per band after that, so a family 7 km away starts 20 points behind a neighbour. Second, a school with a wide radius barely discriminates on address: at 0–12 km, most of South Delhi scores the same, and siblings and alumni decide the outcome instead.
The question to ask before you pay for proximity
Not “is this school nearby?” but “how many points does this school give my address, and how many does the next applicant get?” A 4 km radius with 50 points is worth moving for. A 12 km radius with 55 points is not, because almost everyone clears it.
The dates that matter
The cycle runs from late autumn to March, and the address on the form is the one you have when you apply. For the 2026-27 round, schools published criteria on 28 November, forms opened 4 December and closed 27 December, applicant lists went up on 9 January, points on 16 January, the first list on 23 January, a query window ran 24 January to 3 February, the second list came on 9 February, and admissions closed on 19 March. Age bands are set as on 31 March: 3–4 for Nursery, 4–5 for KG, 5–6 for Class 1, with up to a month’s relaxation at the head’s discretion. Schools may charge only a ₹25 non-refundable registration fee, and capitation fees are prohibited.
If you are buying with a school in mind, the practical deadline is not the form date. It is possession and a usable address proof before forms open, which in South Delhi means closing a purchase months earlier. Our registration process guide and the possession FAQ cover how long that really takes.
