A DLF colony beside a medieval royal tank
The name comes from the Hauz Khas, or royal tank, a reservoir that Alauddin Khalji dug around the turn of the fourteenth century to supply water to his new city of Siri. Later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq built a madrasa along its banks and was buried there, and the lake, the domed pavilions and Deer Park still sit a short drive away.
The modern colony was developed by DLF in the 1960s, as a plotted neighbourhood off what was then Mehrauli Road and is now Aurobindo Marg. On the plan we work from, Hauz Khas Enclave means the K, P and F blocks, while the lettered blocks around the Hauz Khas market are usually just called Hauz Khas.
However, listings use the two names loosely, so the block letter and the exact colony name on the title deed matter. Meanwhile, the original houses are being rebuilt one plot at a time into stilt-plus-four floors, which is the only source of new homes here.
