South Delhi residents in unauthorised and unauthorised regularised colonies who haven’t paid property tax from 2004 and 2015 will have their interest and penalty waived off if they pay their dues in lump sum for this period. Currently, those who don’t pay their property tax before June 30, have to pay an interest of one per cent per month for that financial year and pay penalty for years that follow.

Last year, the Delhi Government had ordered that Delhi’s unauthorised colonies have to start paying property tax. The order comes into effect from April 2016. This included owners of vacant plots. The south civic body’s tax payers have increased by 10 per cent in 2015-16. As opposed to Rs 421 crores in 2014-15, the civic body collected Rs.534 crores in 2015-16. The Chirman of the Standing Committee rejected the Commissioner’s proposal to marginally increase taxes under various categories and slash rebates.
Leader of the House Ashish Sood also said that there will be no imposition of professional tax, which was proposed by the Commissioner. As per Article 276 of the Indian Constitution, State or local governments can impose taxes on professions, trades, callings and employments up to Rs.2,500 per person annually. “We have discussed it in our party meeting. Most are against it. Delhiites can’t handle two tax regimes,” he said.
